On 'American Idol' tonight, the overly demonstrative (and always amicable) Jacob Lusk put 100 percent of his heart into his rendition of Heart's 1987-released ballad 'Alone.' Tonight's theme had contestants singing songs from the year they were born.

Lusk took a calculated chance by attempting a rock song with 'Alone,' and he almost made viewers forget the original. His vibrato and his moves made us pick up what he was putting down. His performance was so convincing and believable, bursting at the seams with passion and fire. Lusk expressed uncharacteristic restraint and didn't come on too strong, allowing the song to truly shine.

Lusk kept it in check, and that's why his version of the song resonated with the judge's panel. "You did step out of your comfort zone," Randy Jackson noted. Even when Lusk drifted a little, he didn't falter and it was like he was making love to the song. "You found your way back within a couple of bars and, yes, you hit the big notes, but you got so tender and caressed it and didn't overpower it," Jackson praised.

The ever-quotable Steven Tyler said it best: "Gospel had a baby and they named it Jacob Lusk." Jennifer Lopez also commended the singer -- who wore a snazzy purple shirt under his black button down jacket -- for giving his all every single time he steps onto that stage. The judges ended the show by saying, "We now have a competition."

What say you, America? We'll find out tomorrow night who is staying and who is going home.
