Season 4 American Idol finalist Constantine Maroulis was arrested Wednesday morning (August 12) after allegedly kicking the mother of his four-year-old daughter in the groin, TMZ reports.

According to the site, Maroulis and Angel Reed got into a fight in their Wyckoff, New Jersey home after he threatened to leave her. Reed eventually called 911 and told authorities Maroulis had thrown her to the ground and kicked her. The singer was arrested but posted his own bail shortly thereafter.

A representative for Maroulis told TMZ that he was acting in self-defense when he struck Reed, and that she'd attacked him first. He also claims he never kicked her, and that she had a history of violent tendencies.

His rep also told the New York Daily News that Reed threw objects at Maroulis to start the altercation, and that Maroulis was left with a bruise and a cut on his thigh.

"He consequently left their home to protect himself and to diffuse the situation. Sometime later the local police came and arrested him for domestic abuse," the rep said.

The couple met during the production of Rock of Ages in 2009 and welcomed their baby girl in 2010. Maroulis played the show's lead, bartender and Wolfgang Von Colt lead singer Drew Boley. Reed played a "young groupie" and was also part of the show's ensemble.
