Just as indie rapper Doja Cat's star was beginning to rise, the artist is now under fire for using homophobic slurs in a series of tweets.

On Tuesday (August 28), in a since-deleted tweet, Doja Cat inexplicably, and without being prompted, addressed using the word "f---ot" in 2015.

"I called a couple people f---ots when I was in high school in 2015 does this mean I don't deserve support?" she wrote. "I've said f---ot roughly like 15 thousand times in my life. Does saying f---ot mean you hate gay people? Do I hate gay people? I don't think I hate gay people. gay is ok."

The rapper was met with a swift wave of backlash—not for using the language in the past, but for her unwarranted use of the slur in what was meant to be some sort of apology.

Hours later, she issued an apology for her apology, writing in another since-deleted tweet, "I have used horrible derogatory and hateful words toward people out of ignorance. I just want you guys to know that you're incredibly special and I hold you dearly to my heart. I'm sorry for anyone I've offended or hurt deeply. You are all worth love and support.

"No one deserves to be discriminated against for their race, religion, or sexual orientation in any angle or sense," she continued. "I don't want you to look at me as a role model. I just want you to hear my music and the joy that you take from that is the most important part. I love making music with you. Thank you for everything to this day."

It's unclear why the artist deleted her message, but as of this afternoon (August 29), she has published a new, more concise statement addressing the controversy.

Earlier this month, the California-based R&B singer and rapper went viral when she released "Mooo!," a bovine-themed rap track featuring the repetitive lyric, "B---h I'm a cow, b---h I'm a cow."
