The first look at Dylan O'Brien in American Assassin, the upcoming film based on best-selling author Vince Flynn's novel of the same name, is here.

On Monday, September 12, Lionsgate and CBS Films released an image from the political thriller which shows O'Brien holding a gun, standing over a man he may or may not have just shot.

In the movie, O'Brien, whose casting was announced in May, plays Mitch Rapp, a trained assassin and young counter-terrorism operative who is tasked by the CIA with protecting the United States from terrorist attacks.

Directed by Michael Cuesta, American Assassin also stars Michael Keaton, who plays a character named Stan Hurley, a Cold War veteran responsible for Rapp's training. Hurley and Rapp are dispatched to the Middle East where they must take down a terrorist operative (played by Friday Night Lights' Taylor Kitsch) who is bent on starting World War III.

The film is O'Brien's first major film role since the actor suffered a serious accident on the set of Maze Runner: The Death Cure back in March. The Teen Wolf star sustained significant injuries in the accident, including a facial fracture and concussion. Production on the action-adventure movie was halted, with filming set to restart in February 2017.

American Assassin, which is currently filming in Europe, has no release date yet, though The Wrap reports the movie will likely hit theaters in 2018.
