Halsey Debuts Haunting ‘hopeless fountain kingdom’ Track ‘Eyes Closed,’ Co-Penned by The Weeknd
Halsey's replaced you with someone new — but she is far from over you.
A month before the release of her sophomore studio album hopeless fountain kingdom, the "Now Or Never" singer-songwriter returns with a moody, chill-inducing new offering from the LP: "Eyes Closed," co-written alongside The Weeknd.
"If I keep my eyes closed, he looks just like you / But he'll never stay, they never do," she damningly proclaims across the slow-tripping production, dwelling closely within The Weeknd's own moody realm.
"He don't realize that I'm thinking about you," she tenderly confesses during the bridge. This won't end well.
The track came together when Halsey was listening to tracks in the studio with producer Benny Blanco, when she heard The Weekend's ad-libbing over one instrumental. "It was a melody he was doing when he was working on Starboy, and one that him and Benny talked about potentially wanting to give to me, but at the time I wasn't taking pitches...I had this whole idea, so I wrote a poem over his melody," she told Zane Lowe and Baz Luhrmann in an interview for Beats 1.
"It's a very traditional, really amazing kind of marriage of two songwriters, because he contributed melody, I contributed lyric, and then we made this song together."
Yesterday (May 3), Halsey announced an arena tour later this year across North America, featuring Charli XCX and PartyNextDoor.
