Kanye West Praises Caitlyn Jenner in ‘I Am Cait’ Premiere
Caitlyn Jenner's new docu-series, I Am Cait, premiered on E! last night, and viewers were treated to a seemingly genuine glimpse at Jenner's new life as the openly-transgender Caitlyn. Fans who were hoping for a Kanye-Caitlyn interaction weren't disappointed, as Kim Kardashian and Kanye West paid Caitlyn a visit in the very first episode.
"Kanye and I have never been very close, but I love his open-mindedness," Caitlyn says in a sidebar interview. "And I love how he's helped Kim come to grips with what's going on."
Kim tries to makes her longtime stepparent feel comfortable in the most Kim Kardashian way possible: By complimenting Caitlyn's turnt-up glam level. "You look beautiful!" she gushes. "One thing I'm really shocked about is how skinny you are. You literally look like Kendall...Kendall's mom." Everyone in the room, including Caitlyn's sister and her mother Esther, laughs as this (though Kim's not lying about Caitlyn's svelte figure).
Kanye then offers his take, which is a quintessential Kanyeism — vaguely philosophical, a little confusing, but ultimately perceptive at its root. "I think this is one of the strongest things that have happened in our, you know, existence as human beings that are controlled by perception," he says. It can certainly be argued that the reason some people find transgender people like Caitlyn so jarring is that it conflicts with their socialized perception of gender, thus confusing (and occasionally, angering) them.
Kanye continues, "Because you couldn't have been up against more. Like, your daughter's a supermodel, you're a celebrity, you have every type of thing, and it was still like f---ck everybody, this is who I am." While most people wouldn't describe those things as the ultimate obstacles in life, it does take substantial bravery to live openly as a transgender person in 2015, and Caitlyn has been using her position of privilege to promote greater LGBTQ awareness.
The above clip also features sweet interactions between Kim and 89-year-old Esther Jenner, who just might be I Am Cait's breakout star. Kanye, who has historically shied away from keeping up with his Kardashian in-laws on camera, shows Caitlyn's sister Pam the comfort-wonder that are "sock shoes."
