Justin Bieber Surpasses Michael Jackson’s Box Office Record

Bieber Fever now officially reigns at the box office. The concert documentary 'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never' has pulled in $72.2 million domestically thus far, surpassing the $72.1 million earned by Michael Jackson's posthumous film 'This is It.'

That makes 'Never Say Never' the highest-grossing concert-related documentary of all-time, according to the Hollywood Reporter. And as Box Office Mojo notes, the $72.2 million haul makes 'Never Say Never' the third-highest-grossing documentary in the U.S., behind only 'Fahrenheit 9/11' and 'March of the Penguins.'

Apparently, movie-goers took to heart Bieber's insistence that the film has a universal theme that appeals to all audiences. Just before the release of 'Never Say Never,' he tweeted, "This movie isn't about me...and it isn't just for my fans...it's about believing in a dream. We all can share in that."

While Bieber now holds the US big-screen record, the King of Pop still reigns when it comes to worldwide box office receipts. Thanks to Jackson's enormous global popularity, 'This is It' grossed $261.2 million around the world, to the Bieber doc's $83 million.

'Never Say Never' continues its run in theaters, while Bieber continues the Never Say Never Tour in Europe.
