Who Lady Gaga was before she was Gaga the icon isn't just common knowledge among fans; it's now the stuff of pop culture legend. But while diehard stans already know that Stefani Germanotta was featured in the audiobook companion to the obscure children's book The Portal in the Park by M. Cricket Casey (originally published in November 2006), her involvement may still be news to some of us. Slated to be credited as Stefani, she asked Casey to change the credit to her then-new stage name "Lady Gaga" following an artistic revelation (via The Village Voice).

Little Monsters can now easily access The Portal in the Park online on Populove, which has partnered with Audible.com to offer a "30-day free trial to the audiobook service which includes one free download of Portal in the Park or another book of your choice." It's also available as an eBook through retailers such as Amazon.

The audiobook also features narration from hip-hop artist Grandmaster Melle Mel, who wrote two original tracks at the author's request: "Fountain of Truth" and "World Family Tree," both of which feature vocals from Gaga herself.

In terms of plot, Populove likens The Portal in the Park to Lewis Carroll's iconic children's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, as it "follows 11-year-old Scott after he falls into a new dimension teeming with monsters who hope to destroy his spirit. The story is a unique exploration of good and evil, and teaches young readers about feelings, emotions, and endorphins."
