Lady Gaga, ‘Heavy Metal Lover’ – Song Review
In case it wasn't clear from the roaring guitars of the Lady Gaga track 'Electric Chapel,' the singer confirms that she's a 'Heavy Metal Lover' on a new song from her upcoming release 'Born This Way.'
Strobing, anthemic beats open the club-ready track followed by Gaga's vocal styles -- which are all over the map (in a good way). The track starts with the attention-grabbing, spoken-word opening line, "I want your whiskey mouth all over my blond south."
Next comes something of a whisper-sing, followed by Auto-Tuned near-rapping. But what keeps the song going, is the memorable chorus. Just simple "Ooh oohs" give the song enough of a catchy hook to be singing along, even when song title, sung in an electronically-altered voice, follows.
Lyrically, the song is filled with dirty, sexual metaphors, as Gaga fulfills the promise of the deliciously sleazy opening. "Dirty pony, I can't wait to hose you down," she sings. "Let’s raise hell in the streets, drink beer, and get into trouble." It's not the most poetic lyric ever written, but who cares? Sometimes you just wanna get hammered and cause mayhem.
In the end, it's the bi-polar elements of a smooth flowing, catchy hook over a hard, grimy backbeat that makes this work. 'Heavy Metal Lover' might be one of our favorite dance anthems on 'Born This Way.'
