Madonna showed off some newly acquired ink on Instagram, and it looks like the Queen of Pop's latest piece of body art has a special meaning.

The "Frozen" singer documented the process of getting a tattoo in honor of her late mom, Madonna Louise Fortin. Fortin passed away in 1963, according to People

Since they share a first name, Madonna felt that she could not get a "Madonna" tattoo.

"I can't put my mother's name because it's the same as mine," she told her son, David Banda, who watched some of the process on camera. "It would look like I put my own damn name on my arm."

Instead, she placed the word "maman," French for "mother," on the inner part of her wrist.

She seemingly bled quite a bit during the tattooing. However, the star didn't appear fazed.

"'Cause when you give birth, what do you do? You bleed," she said. "It's all connected."

"My mother bled for me, so I'm bleeding for her," she added while proudly showing off the finalized body art. "It's a family affair."

Interestingly, Madonna's first tattoo, which she got in 2020, was also a tribute to her family.

According to Allure, she permanently inked the first initials of all six of her children's names on her wrist. Madonna is the mother of Lourdes Leon, Rocco Ritchie, David Banda, Mercy James, Estere Ciccone and Stelle Ciccone

Just like with her latest tattoo, she documented her first on Instagram.

The accompanying caption — "Inked for the very first time" — was a clever allusion to the icon's timeless hit single "Like a Virgin."

People notes that she's added a couple other tattoos to her collection since then, including what appears to be a matching tat that she shares with Banda.

Eagle-eyed fans will notice that the newest ink is located below an "X" tattoo Madonna got in honor of her 2019 album, Madame X.
