'American Idol' returned to Los Angeles tonight, with the help of 16,000 MySpace entrants who auditioned online to supplement other hopefuls. It was another mixed bag of wannabes, with more shutdowns than push-ups. The episode, more or less, served as comic relief, since the freaks really came out in droves.

There were, however, some diamonds in the rough.

The Gutierrez Brothers – Aaron and Mark– could have gone either way, with their candy colored attired and preppy scarves, but the brothers showed soul with their doo-wopped, harmonized version of Bill Withers' 'Lean on Me.' Tyler invoked the Lord, calling the brothers talent "God-like."

New Yorker Karen Rodriguez offered up a searing rendition of 'You Give Good Love' and was praised by the judges, with Tyler referencing her confidence, her spit, her fire and her melody.  She is getting the chance to fulfill her dream to be the first Latina Idol.

Tim Halperin, sporting a hipster beard and crushing on Jennifer Lopez, nearly had the singer-actress-judge welling up when he performed Maroon 5's 'She Will Be Loved.' Of course he is headed to Hollywood. It's the tears thing.

Heidi Khazam belly danced and belted out Alicia Keys' 'Superwoman,' and Randy Jackson dubbed her "one of the best we've ever seen." We've heard that a few times, though.

Victoria Garrett believed in divine intervention and felt that God brought 'Idol' to L.A. for a purpose, and that purpose was for her to win. It was a bit presumptuous, as her off-key, shrieky voice could have put hair on your chest.

Isaac  Rodriguez  -- no relation to Karen -- burned down 'Build Me Up Buttercup,' according to Randy Jackson. "You have a nice smile" was Lopez's sole comment to him. The judges basically told him never to sing again.

Hoboken, N.J.'s Tynisha Roches could have made dogs bark and she chased Randy Jackson around the audition room and wouldn't stop singing.

Cooper Robinson, who gave directions to his crib located deep in Arkansas, was a mix between James Brown and George Clinton. But not in a good way. He was largely entertaining, though. He had spirit.
