Miley Cyrus’ VMAs Date, Jesse Helt, Sentenced to Six Months in Jail
Us Weekly reports that Helt appeared in Oregon court on Tuesday, Oct. 7 and was handed his sentence by a judge. Helt's attorney, Whitney Boise (who was hired by Cyrus), asked for leniency to grant Helt another chance to turn his life around, as she argued that his delinquency was a result of not having a stable upbringing.
The 22-year-old man was arrested in 2010 for breaking into an apartment in Oregon. He later moved to Los Angeles in 2011, which was a violation of his parole. However, because Helt spent most of his time in homeless youth shelters, police didn't seek him out until he appeared on the VMAs. He later turned himself in on his own.
Helt took the stage at the VMAs to accept Cyrus' Video of the Year Award for 'Wrecking Ball' and delivered a heartfelt speech that moved Cyrus to tears.
"I am accepting this award for the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost and scared for their lives right now. I know this because I'm one of those people," Helt said in his speech.
