Sam Smith Covers Amy Winehouse’s ‘Love Is A Losing Game’

Sam Smith -- like most people who enjoy deeply personal songs about lost love that are performed with biting emotional depth -- is an Amy Winehouse fan. So it is that the "Stay With Me" singer recorded his own cover of one of Winehouse's greatest tracks, the lingering "Love Is A Losing Game."

During Annie Mac's BBC Radio 1 Show, Smith debuted the cover, explaining (via Stereo Gum), "I saw the film recently and, sometimes, people forget my age. I was 11-years-old when Frank came out […] and that album has really shaped me as an artist and just my views on music and my relationship with music lyrically. And seeing that film brought me back to that moment of being 11-years-old — her rawness on such beautiful chords, on such expensive chords, is just amazing.”

Smith recorded the cover during the sessions for the Drowning Shadows repackaging of his award-winning album In The Lonely Hour. The re-release is set to include a brand new song, also entitled "Drowning Shadows," which Smith says is the "saddest song" he's ever written.

During an interview with Zane Lowe For Apple's Beats 1, he talked about the meaning behind the song, saying, "It’s about me getting in a taxi and on the way back there was like a crossroads. One road would lead to gay clubs I used to go out to, and the other road would go home. I was in such a lonely, sad place when I was writing this album that sometimes, I’d literally have to choose. The lyric is, ‘Do I go home for nothing or stay out for more?’”
