Willow, ’21st Century Girl’ – Video Spotlight

Willow is getting a little witchy while getting her hands dirty in her futuristic video for '21st Century Girl.' Like her video for 'Whip My Hair,' everything is left up to Willow, as she brings energy, color and life to the otherwise boring and empty scenes surrounding her.

The video kicks off with some voodoo-esque magic, as an old woman mutters as she wanders around a desert wasteland. The woman, played by Cicily Tyson, seems to be the last living soul on the planet, and her mumbling quickly turns to frantic excitement as she gives life to a butterfly-shaped bone she stumbles upon. As the old woman buries the bone in the ground, cloth begins to emerge from the hole, and then Willow appears.

Before she mysteriously disappears from the scene, the old woman whispers something into Willow's ear. Although her words are inaudible, the woman seems to be leaving it up to Willow to bring life back to the barren landscape. Willow picks up some sand and a butterfly magically takes flight from her fingertips. Then the beat kicks in and Willow, who is dressed in a yellow leather jacket and a red skirt with a train, gets the party started.

With a posse of hip young girls behind her, Willow and co. begin to pull a variety of items out of the desert sand. The items start off small, as Willow pulls a red guitar out of the sand and quickly jams before the chorus kicks in. Soon enough, the girls are using chains to pull cars, parking meters and buildings out of the ground in hopes of resurrecting a city.

In one particularly epic shot, skyscrapers are yanked from the sand as Willow sings the lyrics to '21st Century Girl' in the foreground. Another compelling shot is when the 10-year-old fearlessly takes off running with a pack of wolves as her sole companions.

When the city is fully extracted from the ground, Willow -- who is now dressed in leopard leggings and a T-shirt reading 'Boys Need Training' -- and her girls have free reign. They strut their stuff down a main avenue and break it down in front of a car, with Willow showing off her dancing skills as she kills it to the dance beat.

As the video comes to a close, a little girl appears in the street. Willow whispers a message in her ear, and the symbolic butterfly emerges from the toddler's hands.
