Caitlyn Jenner, Donald Trump Supporter, Calls Trump’s Stance on Trans Rights a ‘Disaster’
Avowed Republican and transgender woman Caitlyn Jenner has publicly criticized President Donald Trump for scaling back protections for trans youth on Wednesday (February 22). Still, Jenner's critics say it's too little too late, and that Jenner could have helped to prevent such policy if she'd taken action against the GOP sooner.
Trump's move did away with President Obama's May 2016 instruction to public school systems to allow students to use whichever bathroom most closely reflects their gender identity, and Jenner addressed the action in a social media video.
“I have a message for President Trump, from one Republican to another," she said. "This is a disaster. And you can still fix it. You made a promise to protect the LGBTQ community. Call me.”
Jenner also made sure to address young kids who are struggling with Trump's action.
"I have a message for the trans kids of America: You're winning," she said. "Very soon we will win full freedom nationwide and it's going to be with bipartisan support."
"Now I have a message for the bullies: You're sick," Jenner continued. "Even becoming the Attorney General [Jeff Sessions] isn't enough to cure some people of their insecurities."
In June 2016, Jenner explicitly championed Trump in an interview with Stat because of what she saw as his support of women and the LGBT community.
“Trump seems to be very much for women,” she said. “He seems very much behind the LGBT community because of what happened in North Carolina with the bathroom issue. He backed the LGBT community.”
Many of Jenner's followers said she essentially invited discrimination by supporting Trump.
