Sad news to report for 'Harry Potter' fans, as EW has learned that British actor David Ryall passed away on Thursday, Dec. 26, at the age of 79. Potter fans know Ryall as Elphias Doge in 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.'

Ryall's acting career began in 1962 when he received a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His early credits include several stage productions with the National Theatre and later appeared in British TV productions such as 'The Legend of Robin Hood,' 'Love for Lydia' and 'The Singing Detective.'

As a character actor, Ryall also appeared in various film roles such as in 2004's 'Around the World in 80 Days' adaptation and 'City of Ember' in 2008.
