10 Things You Didn’t Know About Home Free
Home Free took the a cappella world by storm when they landed themselves on 'The Sing-Off.' The five-part group smashed the competition each week, building up a reputation as skilled harmonists and sound-effect vocalists until they earned their spot as the winners of the show's fourth season.
The country vocal band is comprised of Austin Brown, Rob Lundquist, Tim Foust and Chris and Adam Rupp. Though they originally began in 2000, several founding members have moved on and new ones have joined, creating the balanced cast of guys they have today.
‘The Sing-Off’ champs performed a lot of impressive a cappella versions of contemporary songs on the TV show, but their most recent cover is a rendition of One Direction’s ‘Story of My Life.’ It’s a little more folky and upbeat than 1D’s version, but that’s what makes this depiction unique to Home Free.
To celebrate the release of Home Free’s ‘Story of My Life' (which is now available to purchase on iTunes), the a cappella group shared a few interesting tidbits about themselves that we bet you didn’t know!
- 1
Home Free's first big break was a performing contract for four months of cruises in Alaska in 2007.
- 2
'Story of My Life' was all recorded remotely on the road during 'The Sing Off' Live Tour rather than in a traditional studio.
- 3
While the band arranges most of their music themselves, 'Story of My Life' was arranged by Ben Bram, who also works with Pentatonix, 'The Sing-Off' and the 'Pitch Perfect' films.
- 4
In 2001, Chris left college early to go work for a video game company called Ensemble Studios in Dallas, Texas, for a year as a game designer.
- 5
Chris and Adam are the only two original members still in the band from 2000. Home Free met Rob after watching him perform with another a cappella group out of Minneapolis called Four Shadow. Tim would later join the group, and soon after they would add Austin after meeting him on a Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship.
- 6
Before joining Home Free, Tim worked as a songwriter for a production company in Los Angeles for several years, during which he released his own solo country album, 'The Best That I Could Do.'
- 7
Home Free auditioned for 'American's Got Talent' and for 'The Sing-Off' Seasons 1, 2 and 3, before making it on 'The Sing-Off' on Season 4.
- 8
The first touring vehicle Home Free ever had was a big blue behemoth. It had certainly seen better days. They still own an RV that bears their logo that they use during extend runs of touring.
- 9
Prior to joining Home Free, Tim performed in many other groups and on many cruise lines and was able to achieve the distinction of having performed in all 50 states and on all seven continents before the age of 30.
- 10
Rob is a huge movie buff, and has seen over 2,200 movies.
