Katy Perry, America Ferrera to Receive Awards for LGBTQ Advocacy

Katy Perry and America Ferrera, two celebrities who ramped up their activism considerably in 2016, will receive awards from The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) for their work as LGBTQ allies at the organization's upcoming gala.

Perry, who like Ferrera was also a prominent supporter of another HRC (2016 presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton), will accept the National Equality award.

"We are thrilled to honor Katy Perry for using her powerful voice and international platform to speak out for LGBTQ equality," HRC President Chad Griffin said in a statement announcing the honor. "Her compelling advocacy, from the stage to the campaign trail, has had a profound effect on the lives of LGBTQ people—and, in particular, young people. Katy's message of inclusion and equality continues to inspire us and the world."

Lena Dunham will present Superstore star America Ferrera with the Ally for Equality Award.

"America Ferrera has shown an unwavering commitment to advancing equality for all people and sets a stirring example for others to follow," Griffin said. "As we continue the fight for full equality during this very uncertain time for our country, we are constantly inspired by America and our friend, Lena Dunham—both fierce and outspoken champions of equality."

Ferrara has also been a vocal champion of immigrant rights and women's rights, providing the opening remarks during the rally at the historic Women's March in Washington, D.C. in January 2017.

The HRC's Los Angeles Gala and Auction is set to take place on March 18, and openly gay singer songwriter Troye Sivan is also set to appear, as well as Virginia senator Tim Kaine. Previous HRC honorees include Kesha and actor Colton Haynes.
