Hear Lana Del Rey Cover Madonna’s ‘You Must Love Me’
Lana Del Rey has released a sparse, haunting cover of Madonna's "You Must Love Me," the pop icon's Oscar-winning track from Alan Parker's 1996 musical Evita.
The song will appear on Andrew Lloyd Webber Unmasked: The Platinum Collection, a hits collection curated in celebration of the illustrious composer's 70th birthday. Madonna is also featured on the album, with her take on “Another Suitcase in Another Hall," also for Evita. Barbara Dickson originally recorded the tune.
Other contributions include Beyoncé's version of “Learn to be Lonely" from 2004's The Phantom of the Opera, originally performed by Minnie Driver, and Nicole Scherzinger’s spin on "Memory" from Cats.
“You Must Love Me” was written by Webber and Tim Rice and went on to earn the Oscar for Best Original Song, while Madonna landed her first Golden Globe for her starring turn as Eva Perón in the movie.
Del Rey, who last released 2017's Lust for Life, revealed earlier this month that she's begun writing a Broadway musical of her own with longtime collaborator Rick Nowels. She said in a feature for L'Officiel USA that she hopes to be finished in "two or three years."
