Miranda Lambert ‘Hung Up’ First Time a Reporter Asked About Gwen Stefani
For years, Miranda Lambert shied away from discussing the relationship between her ex-husband, Blake Shelton, and Gwen Stefani in interviews. As it turns out, there's a pretty good reason for her resistance to the touchy subject.
Speaking to HITS Daily Double on Tuesday (July 3), the country star revealed that a 2016 interview following the release of her album The Weight of These Wings threw her for a loop when an overzealous journalist asked her about the "Make Me Like You" singer. In fact, she was so blindsided by the question that she promptly hung up during the interview
"I was very publicly going through this [divorce], and there wasn’t an explanation to be given. When the music was out, people had listened, I got on the phone for the first interview," Lambert revealed. "First question was, 'How do you feel about Gwen?' I hung up."
"I told [my manager], 'I just can’t do this,'" she added.
The question came at an unfortunate junction for the artist, who at the time was still grappling with her 2015 split from Shelton. She had avoided doing interviews in the lead-up to her album release so as not to be bombarded with questions about Shelton and Stefani.
"It was going to be hell, and I'd already been through hell. It was hell putting it on paper, putting my words on paper. So I didn’t want to rehash [everything]," she explained. "I’d finally gotten to a place where I wasn’t sad anymore. All the sad moments were there, all the truths were right in those songs. All you had to do was listen. I didn’t need to say anything."
These days, however, Lambert isn't as concerned with rehashing the past as she is embracing the future, "flaws" and all.
"I am who I am. I am honest about being flawed. That's all I can be, you know? I cuss. I drink. I get divorced and get my heart broken," she quipped. "I break hearts. I can't do or be that anymore, or it'll drive me crazy. I won't be good anymore."
