Pink Was Definitely Not Feeling This Year’s MTV Video Music Awards
Pink didn't attend this year's MTV Music Awards, but she did evidently watch the broadcast — and it straight-up bummed her out.
The 35-year-old pop star, who infamously declared herself "too drunk for this" at the 2002 VMAs during an acceptance speech for the "Get the Party Started" video, shared her thoughts on the show in an Instagram post. Her review? She hated it, basically, saying it made her feel "embarrassed and sad" with few exceptions.
Pink deleted her verified Instagram in 2012 after the photo sharing app changed their policy — but she still has a private account, @bethwsh (Beth is her middle name, and "WSH" is her daughter Willow's initials). She wrote of the VMAs (via Celebuzz), "I felt embarrassed and sad. And old. We're getting old. But in all seriousness; I felt sad because music is supposed to inspire. It saved my life. This trash won't save any kid's life." Miley did (very) briefly cede the stage to some trans spokespeople for her Happy Hippie campaign before returning for her big, messy closing number — does that count for something?
The six-time VMAs winner continued, "In a world that is even scarier and with lives still worth saving, who will stand up and have soul? Disenfranchised to say the least. Let down by my industry and my peers."
It wasn't a total hate-fest — Pink did commend a few artists on MTV's performer lineup (though her silence on the rest speaks volumes): "Beside Macklemore and Pharrell and Bieber (pre-sob fest) and the Weeknd, Tori Kelly was dope too. The rest was gross and embarrassing and hard for this aging pop star to believe."
Pink also praised Tori's performance on Twitter, with Tori thanking her for the compliment, saying the kind words from such a source made her "emotional."
The high-drama spectacle that was the 2015 VMAs received largely negative reviews, and just 5 million viewers watched the show on MTV (the broadcast across several other Viacom-owned channels brought the total to roughly 9.8 million viewers).
Hopefully Pink will rejoin the pop landscape in 2016, and help return the VMAs to ideal form.
