Sunday (June 5) was hardly a day of rest for thousands of Kanye West fans in New York City, who flooded the East Village neighborhood in hopes of landing spots at a rumored surprise show at Webster Hall.

West was scheduled to perform new songs from The Life of Pablo at Governors Ball, but the set was canceled due to forecasts of thunderstorms and damaging winds. West did, however, wind up joining Big Sean, Pusha T and Travis Scott at Summer Jam at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium — all the while, his creative director Virgil Abloh sent hints to followers indicating something big would happen at 2AM at Webster. And when a Snapchat update issued by 2 Chainz all but confirmed the gig, fans immediately took to the streets.

According to The Daily Beastwhat resulted was near-chaos. Just before midnight, 4,000 people gathered across sidewalks and byways for spots at the 1,500-seat venue. West fans climbed aboard postal trucks to catch views of the rapper. A subsection of the crowd broke windshields and ran over each other as rumors of where, exactly, West would pop up shifted.

"You can’t go anywhere," one observer said. "You can’t even breathe. People are just pushing each other. I love you Kanye, but it’s not worth it."

By 1:15 AM, a man on a megaphone tried to insist to a crowd that the show had been canceled, but the sentiment didn't persuade many to leave. Fans stayed, with some attempting to climb up scaffolding and window embellishments.

The show never happened, but a few lucky fans caught glimpses of West as a car he was in drove down a nearby street. The artist momentarily emerged from the vehicle's moon roof.

By 3 AM, and with police intervention, streets surrounding Webster were clear. Fortunately, the NY Daily News reports only one arrest for disorderly conduct and no one was reported injured.
