Katy Perry has been bitten by the acting bug. The singer, who will release her first concert doc 'Katy Perry: Part of Me' (and in 3D!) in July, reportedly covets the role of Freddie Mercury's girlfriend in the upcoming biopic about the late Queen singer.

Funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen, known for his insanely hilarious and inappropriate alter egos like Borat and the Dictator, will be portraying Mercury, who died of AIDS-related pneumonia in 1991. Perry would like to play Mercury's onetime lady love Mary Austin, who dated the singer for six years in the '70s and remained close to him throughout the rest of his life. She was one of the first people he told about his HIV positive diagnosis.

The Mirror claims a source said, "Katy would love to be in the film as she is such a huge fan. She would want to play Mary Austin ideally. Katy has a similar look to Mary and would be a brilliant foil to Sacha."

Perry, who showed up at a surprise screening of her own film in London last week, once revealed that she became a fan of Queen and their arena-filling rock when sneaking over to a friend's house to watch MTV and listen to records (her strict religious parents forbade her from listening to rock music as a youngster). Perry said, "I remember hearing 'Killer Queen' by Queen and falling down in what felt like slow motion in my bed listening to the lyrics. And I thought to myself, ‘Oh my gosh, this music is incredible. These lyrics speak to me...’ and that made me want to be what I am."

Since Mercury's music meant so much to Perry and impacted her own development as an artist, it seems like she'd bring a certain amount of zest and passion to the part. What do you think PopCrush readers? Would Perry be right for a role in a film about Freddie Mercury, one of the most influential frontman in rock music history?
