Listen to Kelly Clarkson’s ‘People Like Us’ in Full
Kelly Clarkson's bread and butter are her anthems, and she adds another one to her catalog with 'People Like Us' -- but this time, it's not about a woman scorned. (Maybe Brandon Blackstock has something to do with that!)
This time, Clarkson is belting her heart and soul out to the underdogs. In terms of theme, it's Pink's 'Raise Your Glass' meets Bon Jovi's 'Livin' on a Prayer.' The track is a timely one that transcends a single interpretation: It can be taken as an ode to the struggles of the everyman in a poor economy as easily as an anti-bullying anthem, a rally for the 99 percent, or something else to blast when we have a broken heart.
"People like us we gotta stick together / Keep your head up / Nothing lasts forever / Here's to the damned, to the lost and forgotten / It's hard to get high when you're living on the bottom / We are all misfits living in a world on fire / Sing it for the people like us / You gotta turn it up when the flames get higher," Clarkson sings.
The song is an uptempo pop-rock track, in the vein of 'Since You Been Gone' and 'Stronger,' and fits seamlessly into her collection.
'People Like Us' is one of three new songs off of Clarkson's 'Greatest Hits - Chapter One' compilation, due Nov. 19. The 17-song set includes her biggest hits from her 'American Idol' days to now. The album also features 'Catch My Breath' and 'Don't Rush,' a duet with country crooner Vince Gill.
