MTV Is Making a Royal Version of ‘The Real World’
Undoubtedly capitalizing on the royal frenzy spurred by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's May wedding, MTV has announced a new reality show called The Royal World.
The series is, essentially, a cross between the network's long-running staple, The Real World, and E4's Made In Chelsea, promising an "exclusive, unfiltered" look at the lives of young royals and aristocrats. According to Variety, producers say the show will step inside the cast’s lavish family homes and have access to their elite circles, diving inside a world where "ladies, baronesses and counts will collide." Couple that with their recent pickup of Lindsay Lohan's reality show, and it seems MTV is expanding its audience to include the wealthy elite — or at least, those endlessly fascinated by them.
“’The Royal World’ is a brilliantly entertaining show that invites you into a world which is utterly closed to most of us: the world of young, titled royals and aristocrats,” said Katy Manley, creative director of Royal World producers Initial. “Expect headline-grabbing gossip that’ll leave palaces squirming as we get to know the real people behind the titles.”
Casting for the series has yet to be announced, but will include descendants of aristocratic families from the U.K., Russia, Austria, Nigeria, and Ireland, as well as a “royally connected American.” A premiere date is also TBD.
