Sam Smith tweeted out something that took some of his fans by surprise on Wednesday (April 1). "Guys I have some news....I'm straight," he posted.

There's a catch, though: Sam later added that his post was an April Fools' joke.

Sam, who is openly gay and a proponent of anti-bullying campaigns, is not the only celebrity who jumped on the April Fools' joke bandwagon. Plenty of stars were caught pulling pranks on April 1, but Sam's particular joke has not been taken lightly.

Some fans seemed to enjoy Sam's joke; many of them tweeted the emoji that's widely recognized as the laughing-so-hard-I'm-crying face. One fan retweeted the message with the addendum "BEST ONE YET."

But others weren't laughing at the prank.

One person tweeted: "YOU THINK SEXUALITY IS A F---ING JOKE? PEOPLE STRUGGLE WITH IT EVERY SINGLE F---ING DAY HOW DARE YOU MAKE A JOKE OF IT. ASS!"

Another naysayer tweeted this message alongside the original tweet: "THIS IS WHY GAYS DON'T HAVE RIGHTS." Another user simply pointed out that the joke was "unimaginative" and "flat."

It seems unlikely that Sam did this with the intention of disrespecting the gay community. After all, Sam appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show to share his coming out story, calling it "a brave thing to do."

"I want to be a spokesperson for everyone," Sam said. "Straight people, gay people,  bi people, everyone. I don't want it to be limited."
