Actor Daniel von Bargen, most well-known for his roles on Seinfeld and Malcolm in the Middle, reportedly died on Sunday, March 1. He was 64.

Von Bargen -- who played George Kostanza's boss Mr. Kruger on Seinfeld and Commandant Edwin Spangler on Malcolm -- died after a long battle with an illness, the Hollywood Reporter claims. The character actor made headlines in February 2012 when he reportedly shot himself in the head, telling the 911 operator that he didn't want to have surgery to have two toes removed because of complications with diabetes, Cincinnati's WLWT reports. Sources tells the site that Von Bargen's funeral and memorial service will be private.

According to IMDB, von Bargen also had small roles on TV shows like All My Children, Ally McBeal, the X-Files and Party of Five. He also had parts in films such as Basic Instict, Silence of the Lambs, G.I. Jane and many more.

The actor's friend, actor Bob Colonna, reportedly shared his sorrow about the passing of his pal with entertainment news blog A Trip Down Memory Lane.

"I feel a huge wave of sorrow and relief at the passing of this remarkable man, Dan Von Bargen. I treasure the years when I worked with him at Trinity Rep and in a couple of TV films," he said. "I admire his excellent body of work in the movies. And I mourn for the darkness and pain that were his final years. God bless him. He was a hell of a guy."
