Shannen Doherty Documents Emotional Head-Shaving Amid Cancer Battle
Shannen Doherty has decided not to suffer in silence as she continues to battle cancer.
The former Charmed and Beverly Hills, 90210 star, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2015, has documented the process of shaving her own head in a series of Instagram photos. Across six steps, the actress — with the help of mother Rosa Elizabeth and friend Anne Kortright-Shilstat — goes from signature dark mane to nearly hairless, and fans have championed her for her bravery.
"Your beauty lights you from within, warrior woman! Welcome to the best club no one wants to be a member of," one follower wrote. Another noted, "It won't win. You are stronger. Positive healing vibes coming your way."
In a February interview with Dr. Oz, Doherty said the most crushing part of her condition has been worrying about how the people closest to her will take it.
"You know, you worry most about the people that you love, and about making sure that they're gonna be okay," she said.
She added that battling cancer has given her a new perspective on the demands working actresses face in Hollywood.
"I think that people think that I'm 'sick,' and therefore I'm unable to perform," she said. "There will be that recovery time and that I just have to take for myself. But it's also because you do change a little bit while you're on the medicine. You gain weight, and there is nothing that you can do about it, and I think that all affects a career like mine that's not only based on talent, but it's so much based on sort of the superficial shell that is right here."
