On tonight’s episode of ‘American Idol,’ the remaining seven contestants picked from a pool of songs released in the 21st Century. That's a lot of choices spanning the last 11 years -- giving the contestants a chance to choose more recent hits from their favored genres. The Idols channeled their country and R&B roots, among others, but two standout performances rocked our world. Check out our breakdown of this week’s performances:

Scotty McCreery: Scotty took the safe route and sang LeAnn Rimes 2010 rendition of John Anderson's 1983 hit 'Swingin'.' He showed a wide vocal range, but the judges were not as impressed as his fans.

James Durbin: Durbin gave Matt Bellamy a run for his money, singing Muse's ‘Uprising.' He hit the highest notes ever heard on the 'Idol' stage, which caused Randy Jackson and J. Lo to predict that it would be the best performance of the night, which it was.

Haley Reinhart: Shimmering in red, Haley tackled Adele's biggest hit to-date, 'Rolling in the Deep.' She not only proved she can meet up to Adele's vocal abilities, but according to Randy Jackson, her song choice should propel her into the next round.

Jacob Lusk: Lusk decided to take the sentiment route, covering his idol's 2003 single, 'Dance With My Father.' Lusk had to fight back tears having a personal connection to the lyrics, which both Steven Tyler and J. Lo recognized.

Casey Abrams: 'American Idol''s favorite bearded contestant played favorites in tonight's performance, delivering a rock rendition of Maroon 5's 'Harder to Breathe' before laying a big fat kiss on J. Lo.

Stefano Langone: Dubbed the "ladies man" by his fellow contenders, Langone proved them right by singing Ne-Yo's 2008 hit 'Closer.' Stefano has been on the bottom before, but his last two performances might just be what he needs to get back to the top.

Lauren Alaina: The 16-year-old goes back to her country roots, singing a cover of Sara Evan's 2000 hit 'Born to Fly.' Alaina soars, but the judges suggested (for next time) she tackle a song with a bit more voice, so she can "sing those big notes."
