BTS Score First Grammy Nomination, Make History as First K-Pop Act Nominated
The 61st Grammy Awards nominations were announced early this morning (December 7), with big artists like Drake, Shawn Mendes, Cardi B snagging numerous nominations. There is one nomination, however, that's not just special, but actually history making.
Breakout Korean pop group BTS' 2018 album Love Yourself: Tear was nominated at this year's Grammys! The album was honored in the Best Recording Package field, an award for an album's packaging and design. This is the first time an project by a modern-day K-pop act has received a Grammy nomination.
While the actual award will go to HuskyFox, the Seoul-based branding company made up of designers and creative directors, if Love Yourself wins, it's a big feat for an album by a modern Korean act to be recognized at the Grammy Awards. This one nomination could help BTS extend their fame an influence in United Sates. The nom could also potentially give more shine and exposure to Korean designers and creative leads, showcasing their fresh, unique aesthetic to a new audience.
This is far from BTS or the album's groundbreaking achievements over the past year. Upon its release in May, Love Yourself: Tear became the first K-pop album to top the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart, also securing the highest sales week in the U.S. by a Korean act. Just this week Twitter named BTS the most-tweeted-about music act on U.S. Twitter and confirmed that the group's #InMyFeelingsChallenge tweet is the most-liked tweet of 2018.
