Social Media Reacts to 2018 Met Gala Power Couples… and Odd Couples
The 2018 Met Gala's equal parts controversial, equal parts divine theme this year—"Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & the Catholic Imagination"—summoned show-stopping (and bizarre) looks from stars hailing from all corners of the industry. It also, apparently, was the perfect red carpet launching pad for a number of burgeoning celebrity couples, and the collective Internet had some thoughts on said pairings.
On-screen (and allegedly off-screen!) Riverdale sweethearts Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse—who play Betty and Jughead on the teen drama series, respectively—hit the red carpet together, where they mugged for the paparazzi and shook Bughead shippers to the core. (The pair still have yet to overtly confirm their relationship.)
Shawn Mendes and Hailey Baldwin turned up together, confirming their rumored status as a couple. The chivalrous musician was also heralded by fans for gentlemanly fixing the sweeping train of the model's gown while she posed.
Katharine McPhee and music producer David Foster also confirmed their previously rumored relationship (the two have been linked since September 2017), showing up on the red carpet together, where the Waitress performer called the event a "fun date night." Some, however, found the couple's age gap distressing.
Perhaps the most meme-able of the Met Gala couples was Canadian alt-pop star Grimes and Elon Musk, the capitalist tech giant and innovator behind Tesla. Wearing a sharp white tuxedo, Musk showed up with Grimes on his arm, who wore a sort of Hot Topic couture cyber-goth girl gown, making the pair one of the odd couples of the evening. (The musician even wore a silver choker in the shape of the Tesla logo around her neck. Commitment!)
