Alex Preston was another notable performer on tonight's (Jan. 29) episode of 'American Idol,' when he performed an original song.

The former band kid has long dreamed of being on 'Idol' and making his career through the reality show, and he just might do it.

Taking a risk paid off with his original number, and the 20-year-old student from New Hampshire impressed all the judges.

Even more impressive than his vocal chops and songwriting abilities: He's a completely self-taught guitar player who can't even play with a pick. On to Hollywood it is!
