New York City is about to get a taste of unabashed Japanese fashion — the next Met Gala, which takes place tonight (May 1), will honor Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo as part of the "Art of the In-Between," according to The New York Times.

The Met 2017 Gala (officially called the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit), organized annually by Anna Wintour since 1999, will feature Wintour, Tom Brady, Gisele Bündchen, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams as hosts. The event draws Hollywood's biggest entertainers each year, who pull out all the stops to wow red carpet photographers with risky garments and daring style choices.

Kawakubo, who founded her label in 1969, is only the second living designer who will be honored by the Met with a show.

Tickets to the Gala go for $30,000 while tables go for nearly $300,000. Only 600 people can squeeze inside the star-studded affair. In 2016, more than $13 million was raised to benefit the arts.

The 2016 Met Gala, "Manus X Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology," challenged celebs to look at the advancement of fashion, and found silvery metal bits, daring cutouts and exaggerated shoulders strolling down the red carpet.
